MORE THAN 135,000 SIGNATURES FOR THE POPULAR
LEGISLATIVE INITIATIVE (PLI) FOR SERVICES FOR
PATIENTES WITH FIBROMYALGIA OR CHRONIC FATIGUE
SYNDROME IN CATALONIA (SPAIN)

Barcelona, July 9, 2007. This morning, the Promoting Commission of
the PLI has handed in, to be validated by the Catalan Institute of
Statistics, 135,000 signatures.
More than 135,000 people have given their support, through their signature, to the PLI for services for Fibromyalgia (FMS) and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS/ME).
Eventhough the allowed time to collect signatures has not expired legally established, the signatures almost triple the number required to present a PLI in the Catalan Parlament. Also, more than one hundred Catalan insitutions and organizations from civil society from very different areas have shown their support along with international experts in these illnesses. In Catalonia, citizens known for their work, their lives or their cultural or artistic contributions have added themselves to the ever growing movement started by this PLI. These include the well-known singers: Joan Manuel Serrat, Lluis Llach, Marina Rossell, Pep Sala, Nuria Feliu; writers such as Rosa Regas, Felix de Azua, Ana Maria Moix, Nuria Amat; actors such as Carmen Sansa, Vicky Peña, Laia Marull; political figures and solidarity leaders such as Neus Catala, Anna Balletbo, Rosa Bofill; the architect Oriol Bohigas, the economist Fabian Estape and many more.
The fact that so many people all over Catalonia have committed themselves to
supporting this PLI in such a short period of time, is a sign that people are concerned about the neglect that people living with FMS or CFS/ME endure in Catalonia from the health and social services. More than 135,000 men and women believe that what is being asked through the PLI is just and wish that the Parlament, through the approval of this PLI, will make it possible for these two illnesses to be dealt with in a seriously and with good quality by the public health care system.
Let’s remember that the goal of this PLI is that the people affected by these two
illnesses can have access to multidisciplinary hospital units run by specialized doctors, all over Catalonia, and that the waiting lists will be reduced from the present two years, to a maximum of 90 days. Also, this PLI want doctors to be trained regarding FMS and CFS/ME and that society in general be informed of theses serious illnesses.
The Promoting Commission of the PLI would like, today, through this press release, express their appreciation for all the solidarity and support received as well as the competent treatment received from most of the media. The Commission is committed to continue informing on the future development of the PLI.
